Captain Shopley had an interesting brush with history when in 1871 Bennedict Arnold's expedition against Connecticut landed in the harbor of New London. Their only defense was the, still incomplete, Fort Trumbull occupied by Shopley's 25 30 state militia. Arnold's forces vastly outnumbered Shopley's and they were forced to retreat to Fort Griswold after disabling
