Born Ellen Brown Workman, she was the daughter of a shipping magnate and later the wife of a prominent opthalmic surgeon She studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and her first exhibited work was with the Society of Women Artists (1901) and at the Royal Academy in 1903. She studied in Paris at the studio of James McNeill Whistler,
